How long does a carpet last?

Carpet life – How long does a carpet last?

When choosing a flooring for your home, carpets are the obvious option that provide a blend of style and comfort. But how long does a carpet last for? Well, we are here from Tech Flooring to answer your questions and give you all the information you need about carpeting your home.

How long does a carpet last? Picture looking down onto a staircase - a recent installation from Tech Floors London 5-15 years?

How long a carpet lasts for can be anywhere between 5 to 15 years and this is affected by the quality as well as maintenance. Wool carpets, though more expensive than Nylon ones, are very durable and good as a form of insulation as well as sound proofing. Wool carpets are fairly easy to maintain and are good for high foot traffic areas such as hallways, living rooms and staircases.

Nylon

However, the carpet material that lasts the longest is nylon. Nylon is not as luxurious as wool as it is made of synthetic fibres but, because of its synthetic nature, it comes in a wide range of colours and styles. It can withstand mess, pet paws, regular hoovering and small spills so it is easy to maintain. A high-quality nylon carpet can last between 12-15 years. Want to learn more about our range of nylon carpets? Contact us today for a quote.

Softer?

It’s important to consider what area of your house you want the installation in. For example, the bedroom can have softer pile as it is more comfortable and has less foot traffic going through it. Whereas, somewhere like a hallway or staircase needs a more durable material and pile to cope with foot traffic.

Cleaning

Cleaning your carpets semi-regularly helps prolong their life. How long does a carpet last? Well that depends on how you are taking care of your carpets and cleaning process. Hoovering once a week eliminates surface level loose dirt but more ingrained dirt will need a deeper clean. You can book a carpet cleaning company or hire out a carpet cleaner and do it yourself. For heavy use this should be done every 6 months but a less used carpet can go for a year without needing to be deep cleaned. If your carpet is a darker colour, it may not be as easy to spot dirt as it is on a white carpet but do not be fooled- all carpets need regular cleaning to help prolong their life and keep them looking fresh.

Wool

It is far better to spend a little more on a durable wool or nylon carpet that will last 15 years than to go for a cheap one that will need replacing after 2 years. Here at Tech Flooring, we provide expert help and installation of beautiful wool and nylon carpets. Still unsure at how long does a carpet last for? Then Contact us today for more information on how long does a carpet last for questions or to get a quote for your home.

Carpet stains - our tips for removing them at Tech Floors

Top tips on how to clean and remove stains from carpets

By | Cleaning | No Comments

So you’ve chosen the perfect carpet from us – then disaster strikes! Here is some tips on how to clean and remove stains from carpets

Oops! We’ve all been there. Just a slip of your coffee mug or an enthusiastic five-year-old with a paint pot and disaster strikes. Somehow, it’s always on the carpet that the worst spills happen. Not to worry! We here at Tech Flooring know how important your carpets are to you and we want to help save them from little spills and stains. Here are our top tips on how to clean and remove stains from carpets.

How to clean and remove stains from carpets

When you clean and remove stains from carpets always remember blot don’t scrub!

This is easily the best tip for removing stains. Blotting instead of scrubbing helps remove the stain without pushing it further into the carpet. Place a kitchen cloth in the centre of the stain and soak it up. Then, carefully dry/blot with another cloth working from the outside in. Rinse thoroughly with hot water and blot again. Remember- scrubbing can ruin your carpet fibres and push the dirt further in so always blot!

Water based stains

These types of stains can come from ink, juice, milk, alcohol or mud. Make a cleaning solution of ¼ teaspoons of cleaning detergent (non-bleach) and 900ml of water. Surprisingly, a good DIY cleaning agent lying around at home is white vinegar. If you’re out of cleaning detergent, use white vinegar instead for easy stain removal.

Homemade stain remover to clean and remove stains from carpets

A quick recipe for stain remover is 900ml of warm water with one teaspoon of mild dishwashing liquid. Then add a small amount of white wine vinegar to make the perfect DIY stain remover. Make sure you don’t over-wet the stain. Too much water can damage the carpet. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then blot to remove.

What about wine stains?

Spilling red wine on the carpet is a classic ‘oh no!’ moment that can look scarily permanent on the white carpet. However, there is a simple, home remedy fix. Sparkling water surprisingly works really well to remove wine or juice stains. Spritz over the stain, leave to sit, and then carefully blot away.

Hard stains

Things like chocolate, mud or candle wax can be a little harder to remove. An easy solution is to use a knife to scrape away as much as possible before going in with a stain remover. Vacuuming can be a better option when it comes to removing dirt as you don’t have to worry about pushing the dirt further into your carpet. With candle wax spills, use an ice pack to help harden the wax before going in to scrape it up.

To clean and remove stains from carpets doesn’t have to be panic-stricken scrubbing. We hope you have liked our top tips on how to clean and remove stains from carpets. Carefully putting together a simple cleaning solution and blotting the stain away leaves you free to enjoy your carpet whenever.

However, it can be hard to pick the right flooring for a conservatory. Being near a patio or garden, they often have a lot of foot traffic and this can wear down certain floors quite easily. Top tips to keep your carpet looking brand new!

By | Carpet | No Comments

Keeping your carpets fresh and clean is a must for any home

When your carpets look and feel good, your home has a cleaner, lighter energy that can brighten up your day. Keeping your carpet looking brand new isn’t just as simple as vacuuming every day. There are other tips and tricks you can use to have your carpet looking brand new for years to come! If you are looking for carpets, we here at Tech Flooring are here to help. Here are some of the best tips and tricks for keeping your carpet looking brand new.

A black fluffy dog on a gorgeous greay shagpile carpet, sitting on floor looking brand new

Top tips to keep your new carpet looking fresh

Add in rugs

Adding rugs on top of carpets can seem counter-intuitive at first, but this is a really great way to add dimension and style to your room whilst protecting your carpets. Experiment with different colours and textures to fit your desired look. Having a rug protects your carpet from being worn down and can be easily taken out and cleaned or replaced if needed, so rugs are a great option to keep your carpet looking brand new underneath.

Deep clean twice a year to carpet looking brand new

This might seem like a lot of effort, but deep cleaning your carpets twice a year is essential to their upkeep and helps maintain their freshness. Hire a carpet cleaner for the weekend and do it yourself or book a professional to come in and take care of everything.

Watch out for shoes

This may seem obvious but it is surprising how much damage shoes can cause to carpets.  Especially when you are looking for carpets. Leaving shoes on when walking across carpeted areas can track mud, dirt and leaves into the carpet. This means it will need to be vacuumed more often which, in turn, means it will wear down faster. The shoes themselves can press and wear down carpets as well. Taking your shoes off at the door means your carpets can be lower maintenance and last for longer. If you’re looking at flooring for a high-traffic foot area, laminate or vinyl can be a better option that won’t wear down and will keep your carpet looking brand new.

Vacuum regularly

This is a surefire way to keep your carpets looking fresh. Vacuuming once a week helps maintain your carpets. Changing the filter and bags inside your vacuum helps it perform better for your carpet. A great tip is to vacuum slower on carpets than you would on hardwood floors. Spending slightly more time means all the dirt gets removed and your carpet stays cleaner for longer.

Get rid of stains immediately

It can be tempting to leave a stain if you’re super busy but dealing with a stain as soon as it happens is the best way to get rid of it. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove. Blot don’t scrub as you remove the stain or spill to prevent it from spreading further. Mud can be scraped off with a knife and then vacuumed away. With tougher stains this can be used with the carpet scrubber.

Here are some Laminate and vinyl flooring ideas

Bedroom

Sometimes it’s best to keep things simple. The bedroom is a place you want to be able to fully relax in. Choosing a neutral, wood imitation design is a good idea for the bedroom. Having a wood design means you can add rugs with fun patterns or colours. Adding rugs not only looks lovely, but also makes the room more cosy and comfortable. Generally, choosing a lighter coloured flooring for the bedroom is a good idea as there isn’t much foot traffic.

Bathroom

Choosing a vinyl floor in a tile or parquet style can give your bathroom a classic, timeless look while also providing a comfy and safe feel under the foot, unlike stone or tile. The option of a grey slate vinyl floor adds a sleek and modern touch, keeping things simple yet stylish. Whether you lean towards the classic or contemporary, our range of vinyl floorings offers diverse options to elevate the appearance and comfort of your bathroom. The laminate and vinyl flooring ideas is already exceeding expectations.

Living Room

The living room can be a great place to choose a statement flooring. Going for something patterned or colourful will make the living room really stand out. Alternatively, if you’re looking for something with a more chill atmosphere, imitation wood laminate is a good choice. Grey slate design is very popular and goes with any room. If you choose a more neutral floor you can add interest with colourful artwork, rugs or furniture.

Hallway

Selecting a darker-colored floor for spaces with lots of people coming and going is a good idea. Dark floors are great at hiding dust and dirt, which means you won’t have to pull out the vacuum as often. This not only saves you time but also helps your floor last longer before you need to think about repainting or fixing it up. Whether you go for a neutral shade or a floor with a cool pattern, hallways are a perfect spot to show off a bit of your style. Make a thoughtful choice, and not only will your floor handle all the activity, but it’ll also bring a touch of flair to your hallways.

How to take care of your LVT floor – Clean it once a week

Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) are a popular option for properties and it’s easy to see why. They are durable, waterproof and comfortable underfoot. Because the top layer can be embossed, LVT has a much more realistic look than other options. It can easily mimic stone or wood and comes in a huge range of designs. It is thinner than traditional vinyl and therefore doesn’t disrupt skirting boards. So stay around and see our top 5 tips on how to take care of your LVT floor.

But once you have vinyl installed, what’s the best way to take care of it? Here at Tech Flooring, we want to help you take care of your LVT flooring so it looks fresh and brand new for years to come. Here are our top five tips on how to take care of your LVT flooring.

Top 5 tips on how to take care of your LVT floor

Top 5 tips on how to take care of your LVT floor

This might seem obvious but cleaning your floor once a week is crucial for keeping it looking fresh. By cleaning it at least once a week, dirt and stains are not allowed to sit and cause damage for very long. Cleaning also stops smells, particularly cooking or pet smells, from sinking into the flooring and creating long term problems. Going over with a hoover and then with a mop will keep your LVT floor shining!

Watch out for furniture

Make sure when you move furniture to always lift rather than drag it. Dragging furniture across the floor can create scratches and damage your floor. It’s also a good idea to put floor protectors on the legs of your furniture. These will stop your floor from becoming dented.

Stains

Spills and messes inevitably happen but it’s important to clean them up as soon as possible. If they are left to sit, they can cause deeper staining that’s hard to remove. Go in with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution to clean small stains. Always check the cleaning solution bottle to make sure it is compatible with your LVT floor.

Keep pets nails trimmed

This is an easy way to prevent your floor from being scratched and damaged. Keep your fluffy ones claws neatly trimmed to avoid damage.

Hoover more efficiently

This is a great way to keep your LVT floor looking fresh. Make sure your hoover filter bag is not too full before you start hoovering. Another tip is to check your hoover is on the right setting before you start. Having the wrong setting on your hoover can mean that your floor is not cleaned properly. Taking a good amount of time to hoover ensures that no spots are missed and your floor is cleaned thoroughly.

Hopefully, these tips help keep your LVT floor in top-notch shape. Interested in having luxury vinyl tiling installed in your home? Why you Should Choose Laminate Flooring

What is laminate flooring and why choose this?

By | Laminate Flooring | No Comments

What is laminate flooring?

When there are so many flooring options available, it can be hard to decide between them. Of course, it all depends on the style and use of the room you are fitting the flooring with. If you’re unsure what flooring to go for in your home or commercial property, laminate could be the perfect choice. Not sure where to start with laminate flooring and need more information on what is laminate flooring? No worries. We here at Tech Flooring want to help answer all your questions about laminate flooring.

Why you Should Choose Laminate Flooring and is laminate flooring the right choice for you?

Laminate flooring is made from synthetic layers fused together through lamination. It essentially is made up of a photograph layer and a clear protective cover. This means it can come in a huge range of styles and designs.

What are the advantages of having laminate flooring?

It is very durable, making it perfect for high foot traffic areas. It is also hygienic and very easy to clean. This makes it a low-maintenance floor option which means you can spend less time mopping and vacuuming.

Another advantage is that it is quicker and easier to install than traditional wooden floors. The manufacturing process means each piece of flooring can be made to measure specifically for your room.

Where should I use laminate flooring?

Because laminate flooring is so durable, it’s great to use in spaces like kitchens, dining rooms, hallways and sometimes even bathrooms.

What thickness should I get?

This very much depends on your budget and where you want to install it. Thicker laminate (10-12mm) has a more traditional wood-like feel. A greater thickness also allows for deeper etchings, making the floor look more realistic. Thicker laminate can also provide an element of sound proofing. It can muffle foot noise and echoes.

Thinner laminate (6-10mm) is cheaper so it’s great if you’re on a budget. Want to learn more about laminate flooring? Email or call us today to get quick, helpful information from industry experts. learn as you go.

What style/colour should/can my laminate floors be?

This is entirely down to preference but there are a few things to consider. Lighter colours are recommended for low traffic areas like the bedroom. Darker or patterned floors are suggested for high traffic areas as they will help disguise dust and dirt. If you want something funky, try a patterned floor and accentuate it with neutral walls and furniture. You could also just go for something classic like a laminate wood-like floor and play around with colour in other areas of the room. It’s up to you. Browse our selection of designs and styles today.

Is laminate flooring for you or do you need some more help or advice?

Hopefully this has given you a little more insight into what is laminate flooring and if it might be a good choice for you. Here at Tech Flooring, we will provide every aspect of what is laminate flooring from installation to aftercare.

how to prepare a wooden subfloor

How to prepare for wooden subfloor installation

By | New Floor Installation | No Comments

DIY or get a professional in?

Once you’ve decided on what new flooring you want installed, maybe you want a new wooden subfloor? The next step is to prepare the subfloor. How to do this depends on what subfloor you have. Concrete and wooden floors have very different preparation methods. Here at Tech Flooring, we professionally install incredible floors. However, flooring prep is very important. We advise that you seek a professional to prep your floor. Incorrect subfloor prep can shorten the lifespan of your floors and cause damage to your new floor.

However, if you’re looking to prepare your wooden subfloor, we’ve put together some basic tips and tricks to help.

how to prepare a wooden subfloor

how to prepare a wooden subfloor

Remove the old floor

This is a particular step that we recommend you bring professionals in to do. Not only does the old floor need to be removed but also the sealants and adhesives it leaves behind. Sometimes old floors leave paint behind and this can cause chipping. Scrape away any glue or paint.

Inspect the wooden subfloor

It’s important to take the time to properly inspect your subfloor. Look for any irregularities, bumps or holes. Any protruding nails/screwheads should be nailed down. You also want to check for any squeaky or loose floorboards. You can screw or nail down loose boards or even replace them if you are able to. If you come across any issues, hire a professional to come in and take a look to avoid permanent damage to your subfloor.

Ensure the subfloor is level

This is a crucial step. The subfloor needs to be level so that your new floor can be laid down smoothly. Use a level and tape measure to check that the floor is level. Look for any holes and fill them in. Any low points can also be filled in with floor levelling compound. High points can be sanded down with sandpaper or screed.

Check the moisture content

This has to be done before proceeding with your new floor installation. If the moisture content of your floor is too high, it could cause rotting, warping and crowning in your new floor. Use a moisture kit to test this or hire a professional.

Clean your wooden subfloor

Thoroughly clean your subfloor so that it is ready for your new flooring. Sweep away any loose dirt or dust. Then go over the subfloor with a hoover. Make sure your hoover is on the right setting to efficiently vacuum the floor. Then go in with a mop. A good tip is to use two mops- one for cleaning and one for rinsing. Make sure your floor is given enough time to fully dry before installation occurs.

How to prepare for a new floor installation and how much laminate installation cost

By | New Floor Installation | No Comments

Laminate Installation Cost

So, you’ve settled on a new floor for your property- what are the next steps? What could be the laminate installation cost? The laminate installation cost can vary depending on several factors such as the location, the complexity of the installation, the quality of the laminate flooring and whether you choose to hire a professional installer or do it yourself. Although it is possible to prep the subfloor yourself, we advise that you get an expert to do it. If it is done incorrectly, lasting damage can occur to your new floor and significantly shorten its lifespan. Here at Tech Flooring, we offer professional floor installation services, contact us and get a quote and an estimate on laminate installation costs.

Aside from prepping your floor, there are a few other things that need to happen for you to be fully ready for your new floor. We’ve put together a checklist to make the process easy for you and just remember that laminate installation can be costly however, when done right it reduces potential future problems, saving you money in the long run by ensuring it’s done right the first time.

how to prepare for a new floor installation and laminate installation cost

Remove all breakables

This means everything from home décor to glass light fittings. Have everything removed and placed away from where the floor is being installed. Family photos, artwork on the walls and mirrors need to be removed. If you’re worried about expensive lightbulbs, remove them too and store them safely.

Remove heavy furniture and appliances

This may seem obvious but removing all heavy furniture and appliances is essential. If you can, put the furniture in a different part of the house. If you are struggling for space, keep the furniture nearby and cover it with dust sheets.

Disconnect gas and electricity

Organise for gas and electricity to be shut off before the installers come. This is particularly important if the room has lots of plug sockets or gas outlets (e.g., a kitchen). You can do this yourself but if you’re worried, call a professional in.

Get ready for dust

Although there shouldn’t be too much dust from installing a new floor, it can get a little messy. Covering furniture and surfaces with dust sheets is a great way to keep them protected and clean.

Any rooms that won’t be having an installation should be shut away. You can cover the doorways with plastic sheets and seal them with tape for extra dust protection.

Clean all floors

This is not essential but a good idea to prep for the installation of a new floor. Cleaning all your floors significantly cuts down on the amount of dirt, dust and mildew that can be disturbed during installation, and ensures the work gets done right which also avoids any future laminate installation costs.

Let your new flooring acclimatise

This is an essential step. Your new flooring needs to get used to the temperature and humidity of the room it will be installed in. Let your flooring sit in its box in the room for at least 48 hours before installation.

We hope you’ve found these helpful tips for preparing for your new flooring project!
